ESL As A Universal

the net, via list-serves and bulletin boards, has produced a new (more new) english. English as a second language (ESL) is the language used by participants of a world wide tech language. While the text and dictionary form are US-English, the grammar is hack’d Englandish. With endless shades of grey, or shall I say gray, the net rolls out the changing carpet of ESLisms. These form into what I have termed MSW (many small words) resulting in a small and shrinking dictionary served by a grammar of reduced operation set. This makes it easier for the new users, those people who learned english in short school sessions. But it contributes to those native speakers impression that the “Net” is resulting in a dumming down of conversation. We have entered the world of English For Dummies, world wide and weary instead of word wise and wondrous.
