Skin Care and the growth of google.
Google is a miracle. A miracle founded on faith. And a classic scam. That scam is founded on the laziness of people.
People are lazy and afraid.
Knowing this will not make you rich, but acting on this knowledge will make you richer than you are. It sure worked for Google.
People who go into business do so because they cannot work for or with others. Although they know they must sell to earn, it is an oddity to find a successful starter who is a driven salesman. Enter the first act of faith.
Act 1: Advertising creates sales.
Knowing that they cannot sell, they advertise. This is indirect contact. A big hello instead of a direct connect. A waving hand instead of a handshake. This is the received value of “adwords.” Buy words and let Google spread them across the web. Buy words and let google lead your market to your product page. What could be easier? It seems so “economic”, so “market savvy”, so “damned good business” to let modern advertising build a modern business. A perfect model for perfectly lazy people. A perfect plan for perfect sales cowards.
Suppose it is perfect. Suppose it goes well but falters. Sales don’t exceed expectations. Sales come and go, more like the tides than a plan. So what to do? Keep the faith. Enter the second act.
Act 2: When sales fall, increase advertising.
This is the beat of the Overture. This is what makes money for google. You make a little money and use it to buy more adspace, more words. If they don’t work, buy more. And more. Others are doing well, why not me? Maybe I should buy even more.
It’s a good business, advertising. It offers hope, in small doses or large. Like selling skin cream to foolish teens. If it doesn’t work, they need more. It if does work, they tell their friends. Hooray for social networkism. It worked 40 years ago. It works now, forty years on. It works because you don’t want to sell. You don’t want to make money, you want to spend it. You don’t want to work, you want to boss.
Money for nothing.
give me your money, I give you nothing.
The Google Way. The modern day miracle way.
And it can’t end. The line of teenagers goes on forever. Smart money always creates opportunity for the lazy or the foolish. It is the Valley Way.
