Two women of two different ages died, just yesterday.
They seem to characterize the transformation in society that has taken hold over the past 60 years. One was discovered by the rich, reclusive aeronautical engineer, Howard Hughes. She became a more symbol than significant person. Howard Hughes designed a special bra for her, which she says she never wore, preferring instead to unbutton her blouse, and, as she said, “no one ever seemed to notice” she wasn’t wearing that special bra.
Rita Hayworth:

Her great line:
‘Men go to bed with Rita Hayworth and wake up and find it’s only me.’
It is likely that you are a blond because of her. She wasn’t blond, but she was the bombshell that had the easy looks. Features, hair and curves. Imagine being Rita Hayworth, one of the original sex stars, a sweater girl for the nation. You are the star in the movie, “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds”, actually when Marilyn Monroe walks on, you become the supporting star.
In the fifties, the movies were the entire entertainment world, and they were written in easy symbols, since the movie public wasn’t expected to have gone to high-school. Marilyn took the stage from Rita. The moral, to all those teens, that would never push up to Rita’s silhouette was obvious. Go blond, get the guy.
Suze Rotolo:

Too bad that she was silent so long. Too bad that during the active years of the 60s she walked with, but never ahead of him. It is said that she gave Dylan his political arguments. Maybe that is why he later has none, seeking instead to re-write his history, his impact thus diminished. His value, lessened by prayer.
Unlike many musicians, Dylan’s best work was done surrounded. Someone nearby, even on his arm. Suze was one of those who surrounded him for most of those best lyrics. The words that formed the anthem for much of the revolution.
A failed revolution. Only the songs remain.
