The position of the doubter is the first position, even the dominant position taken by the public toward art.
Those persons who have doubt about the “current gallery” scene, or status of art generally, are in the majority, not the minority. Most of the persons in the world do not consider most works art. Instead, they begin from the standpoint of prove it. Even though they concurrently hold the position that it is their opinion that matters more than yours. If so, then why ask for proof from me? Why don’t you prove to me that it isn’t art?
Of course they won’t seek to prove their position, although they will vote to withhold funding, even withholding authorization of public space, since I can’t prove them wrong. Not at least until they understand more than they are prepared to undertake.
