Is it torture? Would you do it to someone you know is innocent? Would you do this to your mother, or long time friend, or someone you want to become a friend? Will continuing this lead to their death? Is this done out of revenge? Would you expect this to appear in a Mel Gibson movie?

if torture works, ie, it extracts necessary secrets, then
the prisoners we have tortured have revealed necessary secrets.
what about those prisoners we released. those persons that we were told were enemy, yet turned out not to be.
what fictitious secrets did they tell us that we acted on.
are there fictions, their escape clauses, the attacks that we prevented

what secret plans do you have that we can extract?
would it be easier if you turn in your enemies?
what if everyone we capture turns in their enemy?
are they working for us, or we for them?
