Think Jefferson, Burr and the Twelfth Amendment.
The Twelfth Amendment made the Vice President an elected office, not just the second place finisher for President, as our founders had written.
McCain could, by proxy, remind voters that the President lever and the Vice President lever can be pulled separately. You can vote McCain for President, Biden for Vice President. This would be the most interesting year since 1968 or Y2K.
