Former Sen. Rick Santorum said Tuesday that Sen. John McCain, who spent 5 1/2 years enduring brutal treatment at the hands of his North Vietnamese captors, does not know how effective waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques can be.

Mybe, Mr Santorum, Prisoner McCain understands the effect of torture far more than most others do. Maybe his continuring hatred, indeed his misunderstanding of the Vietnamese war is due to the continued effects of his years in Hanoi.

The effects of torture are exhibited in one other significant case. That case is #2 in Egypt. You bet torture is effective. It keeps on giving.
