“I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion. And this is true to the extent that people either passionately love Texas or passionately hate it and, as in other religions, few people dare to inspect it for fear of losing their bearings in mystery or paradox. But I think there will be little quarrel with my feeling that Texas is one thing. For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study and the passionate possession of all Texans.”
John Steinbeck, 1962

The Texas Ground Hog
Today, light snow, ice, windy in Dallas.
A trail of a storm came into North Texas to tap the concrete shoulders of big D. Dallas, meanwhile has been hosting the Super Bowl party. The D’s citizens have been encouraged to show the visitors that “Texas isn’t just pickups and guns”. It isn’t even snowplows or plans. It is government paid for a nickel at a time on those iced over thruways.
Of course Texas runs a lean efficient government, all properly managed by vigilant Conservative Coalitions. These Captains of Commerce even provide downtown security, so that citizens are better protected. They fail to see the yearly snow as anything to prepare for. Their plan is simple, I just don’t see it.
Texas, where a quarter inch snowfall halts all commerce in Dallas, Bush’s dream come true.
Start shoveling America, this is your Erewhon, Right Here, Right Now, Stuck in the Middle of Nowhere by a quarter inch of snow.
