The Surge That Worked

The surge that worked was in the United States.

The 2006 elections weren’t kept secret from the Anbar tribal leaders. Nor was the general publication that Anbar would be lost. Nor were they unaware that their streets weren’t theirs.

With the prospect that a forthcoming withdrawal of US Military support was soon to occur, it seems that a turnaround in alliance would be in order for those Iraq citizens of Anbar. The simple order of events, that even a casual timeline would sketch suggests the probable shift occurred as the United States citizens changed their leadership in Congress.

Recall that last fall, as Anbar was turning, so too it seemed that the US was on the verge of recalling our military. In short, they would have been left to fend for themselves, and they wisely chose to enlist our material support.

It is easier to ally with a strong friend who will soon leave, than to remain frightened by an unwelcome tyrant intent on staying and forever changing your life. –Anbar

United States Of Arcadia

the accordion folding between the arcade and the accolade. between the game and the reward.

hunting crows for profit in germany. one bird, one mark. in that childrens world, a mark was a sausage or half a day at the movies, the saturday matinee.

saturday memories. crows seem such useless birds. loud and prone to quick fighting amonst themselves over the smallest cob of corn.

armed with a twenty-two bolt action rifle, I made my way out from the town, from our clustered military housing and our german caretakers, our nannies and gardeners. Military officers occuping germany lived a life of heavy privilege. And rank had no need for explanation. Not in defeated germany.

the military manner instills this one feature. one feature above all others is the military view. We don’t have to explain our action.

It begins by not questioning. Your duty is action not thought. “You can’t out-think a bullet.” As if you could out-run one. Dodge bullet. That’s a game for our warriors.
