Poets Are Poor

Poet means poverty. Not because poverty breeds poets, but because poets will not earn money. I wonder about the daily disconnect of experience and expression. How dominant theory is without capacity to inform decision.

Perhaps art is apart enough that the market, capitalism’s net of catch phrases, won’t hold it. Perhaps capitalism’s catchy tune “supply and demand” can’t carry us. Too bad it so regularly constrains us.

Blinders on the blind seems, … so American.

The world of art is full of money, at least it attracts the moneyed minority. But do they give or do they buy? Which, why?

Arts groups are usually setup as non-profit. This means a tax structure which requires publishing some of their financials. I say ‘some’ because like all things legal there are ways of hedging. Some forms of this hedge are techniques of aggregation or dis-aggregation of the base data. Any second year accountant can do this for any half assed lawyer.

In working out how art is marketed, I discovered, by working with the 990s, that for some rich locations, the 990s were an early indicator of the financial tide.

990s predict a fall. unfortunately, not the rise.
