Split Grade was the first way the variable contrast was printed. Commercial printing made use of special two filter timers. Both filters were used sequentially. In the beginning, filters were made by the lab. DuPont published the how to: which dyes to use. After several years on the market, filter sets were made. These were considered expensive so the use of 2 filters continued in many labs.
