Valentines Is The Only Holiday

It strikes me that holidays are frequent and pointless.

Maybe that is age, not wisdom. Yet, valentines day is made up to sell someone else’s words, pictures, packaged emotion. It is meant to be unwrapped not unpacked or understood. We are supposed to assume the meaning, like most transfers, it has to be already known to be clearly understood.

Valentines say hello in childish importance.

Valentines say hello in mature memory.

The heavy commerce around this is filled with fake passion, consumption, emotion. Picked and packed by others. Comicly presented as an afterthought of some guilty, forgetful, oh so typical male.

So why is it the only holiday of my year? because it is crafted so badly it could be ignored. This is a day like every other day among commerce, but it pretends to be about love, not resurection. Just simple love between, but not among.

getting to your past work. And then

this is another multi delayed post. I liked the title. wrote it down, then forgot what I’d wanted it to be about. Happens too often.

While digging through last years work, I noted many that could fit into much older carts so put in the sub-head: getting to your past work.

A week passes and I’m thinking about carry cameras and how they may need permits someday. More importantly I’d discovered a very old note of mine with: Small Camera is the Big Invention. Whereupon I made a picture of some of my carry cameras.

The 3 cameras – 2 are film cameras. The one at the bottom (with a screen) is digital. It is the only camera I still use. The film cameras are no longer used. Film isn’t available. Not new film.

Odd, isn’t it, that the supposition of film is forever, digital is transient, subject to passing fashion doesn’t survive a simple againward glance.

  • minolta 110 (1976 – 1979) – I used this camera for several thousand rolls of film. The flash on it is a Nikon strobe which served to guarantee my night-time excursions would provide negatives that startled
  • cannon elph (1996 – 2002). Used APS cartridge system. Many hundreds of rolls.
  • sony cybershot (uses JPEG – format first used in 1992, 25 years old now) JPEG is used in medical imaging so will probably be around for many more years.

of being known are bounded by who you know.

do you and yours talk about how to mix, store, dilute developer? is your time spent discussing means and methods of craft? is this balanced with shows you’ve seen; books, music, food… is the food crafted or thawed.. how much of your life is spent trying to impress others with your knowledge is a measure of how little knowledge you have.

creative life means a style of life; one which encompasses those arround you. much of the sidelined, the hobby crowd, those people are stranded because they never new what to think about. they weren’t able to sustain their own inner drive, so they persued engineering, or accounting.

I used to tell students that if they didn’t find it easy to work endlessly, then their money would be better spent opening a hot-dog stand outside a bank instead of in art school. Less risk and probably the same level of satisfaction. Earn money to buy someone else’s art.
